What the photograph doesn't show
Some days, I get ready slowly. I choose my earrings. Tie back my hair. Look for a beautiful light.
Then I look at the photograph and think of everything left outside it.
The conversation that never happened. The message I wrote and deleted. The place in front of me, still empty.
Someone looking sees a woman. I remember that day.
Perhaps that is why I take photographs.
Because I know a face always carries more than it reveals. That some smiles take effort. And some silences ask for company.
I want to give time to those who arrive. Until their shoulders soften. Until they stop asking if this is all right.
And simply exist.
